Amazon Business,
Explained Straight

Plain-English answers on Amazon Business accounts and Business Prime plans — what's free, what's not, and whether it's worth it for a team your size.

The account is free. The membership is not.

Almost every guide to this topic blurs two separate products into one decision. They are not the same thing and they do not cost the same thing.

An Amazon Business account is free. You register with a business name, address and tax ID, and you get business-only pricing, quantity discounts, multiple users with permissions, approval workflows, purchasing reports, and the ability to enroll in Amazon's Tax Exemption Program. None of that carries a fee.

Business Prime is a separate paid membership on top. It is what adds free business shipping, Spend Visibility, Guided Buying, extended payment terms and Prime Business Rewards. You need the account before you can buy the membership. You do not need the membership to use the account — and plenty of small teams genuinely should not buy it.

Business Prime, all five tiers

Amazon raised the seat allowance on every paid tier. A large share of the pages ranking for this query still publish 3, 10 and 100 users — the current numbers are 5, 20 and 200. That difference changes the buying decision at the exact moment someone is making it, which is why every figure on this site carries the date we last checked it against Amazon.

Three pages answer the question most people actually arrive with.

Why trust a site you've never heard of

Every guide in this category writes as though it has run the thing itself. We have not held a Business Prime account, and we say so.

What we did instead: read Amazon's published plan terms and help-center pages, cite the exact page behind every factual claim, do the break-even arithmetic Amazon does not publish, and stamp the date we last checked. All of it is checkable against the sources we link — which is the point. You should not have to take our word for a number when you can click through to Amazon's own page in one hop.

The other thing we do is name who should skip it. Every decision page on this site has a section for the readers who do not need the product. A site that recommends everything recommends nothing.

Questions people ask first

Is an Amazon Business account free?

Yes. Creating an Amazon Business account costs nothing — there is no signup fee and no monthly charge for the account itself. Business Prime is a separate paid membership layered on top, and you never have to buy it.

What is the difference between Amazon Business and Business Prime?

Amazon Business is the free account type that gives you business pricing, quantity discounts, multi-user access, approval workflows and tax-exemption enrollment. Business Prime is the paid membership that adds free business shipping, Spend Visibility, Guided Buying, extended payment terms and Prime Business Rewards. You need the account to buy the membership; you do not need the membership to use the account.

How much is Amazon Business Prime per year?

Amazon publishes five tiers: Duo is free with a personal Amazon Prime membership, Essentials is $179/year for up to 5 users, Small is $499/year for up to 20, Medium is $1,299/year for up to 200, and Enterprise is $10,099/year for unlimited users. Verified against Amazon's plan page on August 11, 2026.

How many users can you have on an Amazon Business account?

The free account supports multiple users. The seat caps apply to paid Business Prime tiers: 5 on Essentials, 20 on Small, 200 on Medium and unlimited on Enterprise. A lot of guides still publish 3, 10 and 100 — Amazon raised those numbers and the old figures are wrong.

Is Amazon Business Prime worth it?

It turns on headcount and shipping volume. One figure you can check: Amazon publishes 2% back on Prime Business Rewards for Essentials, so on rewards alone $179/year is repaid at roughly $8,950 of qualifying spend on eligible brands sold by Amazon. Below that, the decision rests on how much shipping you actually pay for — which only your own order history can tell you. If your orders already clear Amazon's free-delivery threshold, the free account is very likely enough.

Do you need a business license for an Amazon Business account?

Amazon asks for a business name, address and tax identification number at registration, along with a verified business email and a payment method. It does not publish a requirement for a state business license. Sole proprietors are a supported case — Amazon markets the Duo tier specifically at sole proprietors.

Is Amazon Business the same as being an Amazon seller?

No. Amazon Business is a buying account — it is how an organization purchases from Amazon. Selling on Amazon is a separate program with its own registration, fees and requirements, and nothing on this site covers it.

Does Amazon also call Business Prime 'Prime Business'?

Yes. Amazon uses both names for the same product — the plan page says Business Prime, and some Amazon marketing pages say Prime Business. They are not two different memberships.

Bulk & Business is independent and not operated by Amazon. Links to Amazon on this page are affiliate links — we may earn a commission if you sign up, at no cost to you, and it never changes what we recommend. Full disclosure.

Figures on this page come from Amazon's own Business Prime plan page and help center.
